Bursaries
Highgate offers means-tested bursaries at 11+ and 16+ entry points. They currently support around 100 pupils, with an average bursary award of approximately 94% of fees. Bursary recipients also have access to additional funding they can use towards school meals, trips, music tuition, uniforms, IT, travel and other resources.
Alongside general bursary provision, the school offers a Keyworker Bursary where each year they make available one full-fee-equivalent bursary for a child of parents/carers who are keyworkers and live locally. Their definition includes frontline NHS staff, teachers, police/community support officers, prison and probation staff, firefighters, ambulance crews and members of the armed forces.
They also offer a sixth form Changemakers Bursary Programme, designed to widen access to its sixth form for ambitious, academically gifted pupils who would otherwise be unable to afford school fees. The school particularly encourages applicants with strong academic drive, entrepreneurial thinking and an interest in STEM. The programme goes beyond tuition fees, with additional support for enrichment/co-curricular opportunities, trips and resources, alongside mentoring, careers and professional-network opportunities.
As a general guide, families with total household income below £45,000 and without significant assets may be eligible for 100% fee assistance, while partial support may be available for household income up to £107,000. The Changemakers and Keyworker bursaries offer enhanced support across a wider income range, with families earning up to £125,000 able to be considered. All awards are individually means-tested and take account of wider financial circumstances.
Pastoral support is an equally important part of the school's bursary provision. The school aims to create a strong sense of belonging, where every pupil feels welcome and able to participate fully in school life, regardless of their socio-economic background. Bursary pupils take part in the same induction activities as their peers and have access to guidance and support throughout their time at Highgate, including designated members of staff who have specific pastoral oversight of pupils in receipt of bursaries. The school offers opportunities for parents and carers of bursary pupils to meet, share experiences and build connections in a supportive and confidential environment.
